For global companies, how good they can overcome different cultural values across countries predicts their competitive advantages. In this panel session, the discussion between Geert Hofstede’s theoretical successor and senior management of leading Japanese companies will prescribe how we deal with context.

Gert Jan Hofstede (born 1956, population biology, PhD), son of Geert, is a biologist of human social behaviour. In his career he tackled various subjects: trust and transparency in international networks, simulation gaming, computational social simulation. In most of his work the role of culture, an essential part of human social biology, is large. Gert Jan is also a charismatic speaker. He has worked with audiences in business and academia around the world.

Bob is the founder of itim International in 1985 and the hofstede centre, He is an economist who has worked for the ILO, a UN organization and for industry. Since 1969 he travels extensively and his work has taken him to over 65 countries. Starting around twenty five years ago he has developed quick scans to measure actual and desired cultures of organizations, based on additional research conducted by Geert Hofstede in the 1980's. Moreover, he has developed a fully integrated tool kit to assist management consultants to help their clients in meeting their objectives in the best possible way.

He also analyses how Japanese managers could be developed into real global leaders from the lens of cross-cultural management.

He has been involved in supporting disaster-affected Tohoku area’s reconstruction since 2011 by running a not-for-profit organization “Let’s Talk Foundation.”
